sensory overload

It is, in fact, never as good as the real thing.  I had seen it in countless textbooks, coffee table books and documentaries but nothing prepared me for this house.  Even on the walk up the trail to meet our tour guide i was jovial and loud.  Then from the left of the tree line the corners appear and my mood quickly shifted to quiet and awe inspired.  I had never seen anything like it and never would again.  I now envy anyone who gets to see it for the first time;  that feeling changed me.  It was almost religious, like i belonged.  Gothic cathedrals and churches don’t inspire me as much as this building did.  Simply put, Frank Lloyd Wrights House at “Fallingwater” is an absolute masterpiece.

Falling Water, F.L. Wright

All of the pictures in the world cannot begin to illustrate what it is like to be there; on that site.  They don’t show you the small things.  The hand washing area before you enter the hidden door.  The guest house pool fed by the stream.  The corner windows that open to full panorama.  The areas where the natural stream is allowed to flow through the house.  (i can go on for days!)

But even more than all of that pictures dont have a scent or texture.  Touching the rocks and cement, leaning on a balcony, feeling the door knobs and desks.  It was all just right… or wright!  (sorry, bad joke)  And then the smell.  The scent of nature, and wet rock.  The smell of vintage books in a study.  Everything was as it should have been.

And still after all of that, I just listened and all I head is water and nature in harmony with design.  It is different from being next to a stream or waterfall and hearing it.  You are actually a part of it in this house.  You feel as though you are in the stream and the water is just taking you for a ride.

If church made me feel this way I would go every day.
