i am currently staring out a window at the famous citgo sign that is visible from fenway park and pondering how much i loved boston. new york city last year was my first experience in a truly large city. it was fun and very memorable. but it also showed me that it was took a big a city for me. maybe i didn’t realize it at first, but i do now. boston is he type of large city i want to live in. it has the history and charm of buffalo, all he while adding the job market and wide range of activities only a big city can offer. this is certainly a place i could live.
today started with a coffee and croissant in the boston university barnes and noble / starbucks. while there i read a paper and found out that dr. randy pausch died today. for those that may not know he was a professor at carnegie mellon university in pittsburgh. he had given a “final lecture” that i watched in my writing class this past semester. the small portion that i saw stayed with me, so i decided to buy his book today while at barnes and noble.
after my morning coffee and waiting for tim to wake up the day really took shape. we decided to take a walk down newbury st. in boston. it is this area of the city that runs about eight blocks. it has small coffee shops and pubs, as well as small shopping boutiques. while there i found a puma shop where i bought this sweet polish soccer shirt and lanyard. i really wanted these “mach 5″ pumas but thought better of it. after there i found an american apparel store. it is nothing like i thought it was going to be. ill stick to buying matt good garb at concerts. the store was a bit… pretentious i guess we will say. after that we found this sweet church and the boston public library. following that we went to a pub for a late lunch and then walked to the black bay fens.
after that we walked back to the hostel, passing by a crazy fenway park again. such a cool experience to be near. there was actually a guy yelling “lets go yankees” from his apartment window and being answered by red sox fans in the ballpark.
we recharged the batteries in the room for a bit before going to get the car (though not my camera which i now regret). to get to the car we had to cross the harvard bridge. this bridge has some amazing views of the city.
after this we walked through m.i.t.; it s as impressive as harvard, if not more so. i’m just mad that my afore mentioned camera battery died while walking through the campus. however i did get to say hello to someone is chinese; i was giddy as a school girl!
after successfully retrieving the car, i ran to the store to buy some pencils so i could sketch. with tim up on the eighth floor, i walked to a spot on boston university and tried to sit on the grass. big mistake, it was soaked! i would not let that deter me though, i sucked it up and sketched. my first few were blah, but in no time i was happy with what i was doing. just needed a little warm up after not drawing for a while. finally we grabbed our final dinner is boston and walked to the cask and flagon for a final drink.
all in all, a wonderful mini-vacation. i couldn’t be happier that i decided to come on this trip. i only wish dan could have come. i hope to see boston again someday, maybe as a permanent resident.
